From Humble Beginnings to Community Staple: The Story of Old Mill Country Store

Humble Beginnings

Nestled in the picturesque and agriculturally rich community of Kittitas, the story of Old Mill Country Store is one of passion, dedication, and community spirit. It all began in 1987, when Kevin and Becky McDowell, deeply rooted in the agricultural traditions of Ellensburg, saw an opportunity to serve the valley they cherished and were given the opportunity to lease retail space in an existing mill. This eventually led to the opportunity to buy the mill where they opened their first store, Central Livestock Supply, to provide bulk livestock feed to local farmers and ranchers.

A Growing Vision

Their commitment to the community soon led to growth. In 1994, they acquired the Wenas mill, and six years later, the opportunity to purchase the Third Street location presented itself. This expansion marked the start of a new chapter. The business was renamed Old Mill Country Store, and a modest retail space—described by long-time employees as more of a "shoebox" than a store—was opened.

A Partnership with Purina and Major Expansion

In 2003, the McDowells took a transformative step by partnering with Purina, becoming a premier dealer, and undertaking a major store renovation. This expansion added 5,000 square feet of space and a variety of new products. With these changes, Old Mill became a cornerstone for the agricultural and ranching community in Ellensburg, offering more products and services than ever before.

Growth Beyond Ellensburg

The next 15 years saw Old Mill solidify its reputation as a trusted provider for farmers, ranchers, and pet owners alike. By 2018, the business expanded further, merging with Cascade Animal Care in Yakima. This addition not only brought a second location but also introduced a fully operational in-house pharmacy for veterinary prescriptions, wholesale products, and retail services.

Serving the Community and Beyond

What began as a local feed mill has evolved into a full-service store catering to a wide range of customers. From the largest cattle ranch to the smallest pet owner, Old Mill Country Store now offers:

Old Mill has also embraced the digital age, extending its reach far beyond Kittitas County. Through their online store, they now serve customers as far away as the East Coast.
